Wikipedia defines a “Sister Souljah moment”:
…a politician's public repudiation of an allegedly extremist person or group, statement, or position perceived to have some association with the politician or their party. Such an act of repudiation is designed to signal to centrist voters that the politician is not beholden to traditional, and sometimes unpopular, interest groups associated with the party, although such a repudiation runs the risk of alienating some of the politician's allies and the party's base voters.
To add to Barack Obama’s repeated either refusals or word play avoidances of directly and forthrightly engaging in a “Sister Souljah moment” regarding his legion of radical mentors and backers, Friday night he couldn’t even be straight in admonishing a comedian about his humor that members of Obama’s audience found crude and offensive.
Barack’s on stage equivocating comment to the comedian:
"We can't afford to be divided by race. We can't afford to be divided by region or by class and we can't afford to be divided by gender, which by the way, that means, Bernie, you've got to clean up your act next time," Obama said. "This is a family affair. By the way, I'm just messing with you, man."
The comedian’s offensive joke at Obama’s Chicago fundraiser:
a “riff with a joke involving the women in the families and living with two "hos."
The comedian, Bernie Mac, is that, a comedian, and known to often be off color (no pun intended). Bernie Mac should mind his mouth before audiences who appreciate cleaner humor. But, he’s still a funny comedian. He even had this line at the fundraiser:
Mac said he is a Democrat "born and raised" but added that, "I'm a Republican at tax time." He mimicked a mock warning from an imagined staffer: "Don't kill the message."
On the other hand, Obama’s continual pandering and straddling are neither funny nor presidential leadership. Hopefully next November he'll be hooked off the stage.
UPDATE: Ed Morrissey has more commentary: “If it’s not good for Don Imus and for rap, why is it good for Bernie Mac and Obama fundraisers? Could it be that money trumps his principles yet again?”
